Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body, making it one of the most important nutrients for overall health and longevity. Despite its critical role, magnesium deficiency is remarkably common, with some estimates suggesting a significant portion of adults fail to meet recommended daily intake levels.

What is Magnesium?

Magnesium is a naturally occurring mineral and electrolyte found abundantly in the earth's crust, seawater, plants, animals, and the human body. Roughly 60% of the body's magnesium is stored in the bones, with the remainder distributed throughout muscles, soft tissues, and bodily fluids. As a cofactor, magnesium supports enzymes responsible for energy production, protein synthesis, and nerve function. According to Harvard Health, it also plays a key role in keeping the heart beating steadily and the immune system strong.

Key Functions in the Body

Magnesium plays a central role in maintaining normal muscle and nerve function, regulating blood glucose levels, and supporting a steady heart rhythm. It is also required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and the antioxidant glutathione. Additionally, magnesium contributes to the structural development of bone and is involved in the active transport of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes, a process essential for nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm.

Magnesium and Aging

As individuals age, magnesium absorption tends to decline while urinary excretion increases, contributing to a higher risk of deficiency among older adults. Chronic low magnesium status has been associated with increased inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction, all of which are recognized hallmarks of aging. Some researchers have explored magnesium's potential role in supporting healthy cognitive function, cardiovascular health, and bone density as part of a broader longevity strategy.

Sources of Magnesium

Magnesium is found in a wide variety of foods, including leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and dark chocolate. Certain types of mineral water and fortified foods can also contribute meaningfully to daily intake. Because modern soil depletion and food processing can reduce the magnesium content of crops, many people turn to dietary supplements to help close the gap, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.

Magnesium Deficiency

Magnesium deficiency, also known as hypomagnesemia, can result from inadequate dietary intake, certain medications, gastrointestinal disorders, or excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms may include muscle cramps, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and mood disturbances. Because magnesium levels in the blood do not always reflect total body stores, deficiency can be difficult to diagnose through standard testing alone.

Magnesium Supplementation

Magnesium supplements are available in several forms, including magnesium citrate, glycinate, oxide, and malate, each with differing rates of absorption and tolerability. While supplementation can help address confirmed deficiencies, excessive intake from supplements may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. As with most micronutrients, obtaining magnesium primarily through a balanced diet is generally considered the preferred approach, with supplementation used to fill specific gaps.
